Guidelines for Ushers

Before the Service

Arrive 15 minutes before start of service. Check in with LEM

Turn on lights as required. Switches are in the back of Church and Sacristy

Open windows for proper ventilation, if needed

Make sure Alms Basins are on the altar rail

Make sure Hymnals and Prayer Books are in order and kneelers in "UP" position

Make sure either your usher partner or a volunteer is selected to present bread and wine during Offertory Hymn

Hand out Bulletins, Service Manual, printed music, if any

Check hymn board is correct

During the Service

Late arrivals are seated only during intervals (hymns, psalms, service music). Do not seat people during readings, prayers, or sermon

One of the ushers need to notify the Sunday School a few minutes before the Peace, so the children are welcomed into the Church during the Peace

After the offertory sentence and when the offertory hymn begins, proceed down the aisle to the altar and take the alms' basin from the crucifier or LEM and take up the collection

During the Presentation Hymn, walk back to the altar with the alms basins, followed by the Oblation Bearer (person carrying the bread and wine).

Hand the alms' basin to the crucifier or LEM. The Oblation Bearer hands the bread and wine to the crucifier/LEM

Move the center kneeler into place and close the altar rail (gate)

At Communion, insure a steady flow of worshippers to and from the altar. After the Choir receives

Communion first, one usher leads the people out of their pews and motions them forward to receive at the altar rail. As communicants leave the altar rail, others are directed forward from their pews

Ushers are last to receive communion, they then open the altar rail (gate) and move \tab center kneeler to the side and return to the back of the Church.

After the Service

Attendance should be taken (a good time is during the post-communion prayer). The attendance form is at the usher's station (include all children, acolytes, choir members, organist and yourself)

Collect Service Manuals, handouts, and bulletins as people leave the Church

Tidy pews by collecting any handouts left behind, returning Prayer Books and Hymnals to their places, and raising all kneelers

Close windows

Turn out lights

Put completed attendance form in Offertory Collection Box on wall in Sacristy

If you are unable to usher on your assigned day, please switch with another usher and please call the church office in advance, so the bulletin may be printed accurately. Church Office (310) 457-7966
