Message from the Rector

A new year’s resolution and invitation:
“I shall take a pilgrimage to the Holy Land!”

St. Adian's Espicopal ChurchThe Holy Land – what images does it engender?

Jerusalem, Ah Jerusalem! that fabled city with golden stone walls, chimes of bells, calls from minarets: "Allah-ou-akhbar"; Jews bobbing at the Wall; Hamas and El Fatah hard at the killing; Israeli tanks charging; violence and calm; the Evil and the Sacred; and all that is most holy for Arab, Jew and Christian alike.More >

Meet the new Dean and President of the Episcopal Theological School at Claremont
Many of you knew the Very Rev. Mary June Nestler, who was the Dean and President of ETSC and is now the Canon Theologian on the Cathedral Staff in Salt Lake City, UT. The Very Rev. David Jackson is the new Dean and President of ETSC and will be at St. Aidan’s as Celebrant and Preacher at both services on December 30, 2007. He loves to sing, so please encourage him to join the choir and welcome him warmly!

Epiphany Celebration
On the Feast of Epiphany, Sunday, January 6, the Rev. Kathie Clark will be our guest preacher and celebrant at both services. She has been the Associate Rector at Prince of Peace in Woodland Hills for many years until her recent retirement, which affords her more time in her studio where she works on stained glass art.

Annual Meeting
January 20th after the 10 am service is our annual meeting. Committees and leaders of the various parish ministries are invited to submit reports. The youth group will be raising money for their summer mission trip by serving a delicious pancake breakfast!
The following candidates have been nominated for a 3-year term on the Vestry: Guillermo Borda, Michael Geibel, Ceci Najar, and Sky Stipanowich. Those nominated as delegates to Diocesan Convention are: Jeff Johnson, Joe Lopez, Lon Porter, and Dee Dee Davidson Porter (alternate). We thank these individuals for their willingness to serve.

Away for 2 Weeks
The Rev. Joyce Stickney will be away on vacation December 26 – January 10 celebrating the New Year in Costa Rica with family. If there is a pastoral emergency, please contact Annie Gomba (Preschool and Parish Administrator) in the Church Office.

Welcome Annie!
Please welcome the new Church and School Administrator, Annie Gomba, who joined our staff in December, just in time for the busy holiday season! She is a member of St. Anne’s Church in Santa Monica where she has also been employed for the past nine years. Before moving to the United States, Annie was a professional singer in the Philippines! We may need to schedule a parish karaoke event this year to hear her beautiful voice.

It’s not too late to pledge to St. Aidan’s Church!
A hug and thank you to all of you who made a pledge to St. Aidan’s for 2008. As of December 15th, 2007, 62 individuals and families have pledged. We are hoping and praying that we will meet our target, so please consider making a pledge if you have not yet. Pledge cards are available at the church entrance and offering envelopes for those who have made a pledge are in the parish hall for pick-up – simply write on the clipboard which number you are taking for the church records. Thank you!

Annual Vestry Retreat
The Vestry members will be away on retreat at Mt. Calvary Monastery in Santa Barbara on the weekend of January 25-27. Please hold them in your prayers as they spend time discerning, planning and worshiping together. The Rev. Dr. Brian Johnson will be the preacher and celebrant at both services on Sunday, January 27th.

A Brief Epiphany
The Twelfth Night and the Feast of Epiphany is celebrated on January 6th, a feast day which is historically older than Christmas and is now often overlooked. Many countries save their high feasting and gift-giving for Epiphany. “Epiphania”, the Greek word, means manifestation, revelation. On this feast we have revealed to us the other side of the mystery of the incarnation: this tiny, vulnerable infant in the straw is also the God and Ruler of our universe. We recount the story of the wise men who sought the newborn king by following the great star. The liturgical season of Epiphany is only one month long as Ash Wednesday sneaks up on the 6th of February. Mark your calendars for an early Mardi Gras this year on the eve of February 5th.

Pre-School News

Dear Saint Aidan’s Church:

Happy New Year!

Our December was very busy. We had a lovely family Christmas caroling program with Reverend Joyce on Friday, December 21, in the Church. School was closed for the Christmas Holiday from Monday, December 24th through Friday, January 4th.

We have some programming news for you: we have a garden angel, Johnny. He meets with a small group of children three days a week. The children study composting, soil management and care. They have planted pineapple, squash, onions, and garlic. This winter we will add a planting frame into the garden in the shape of a teepee. It will support trailing plants.

The Pre-school Committee and the Spring Fair Committee have decided to wave the Spring Fair this year. In its place will be a lovely dinner gala with entertainment and a silent auction. Everyone is invited! Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 17th. There will be more information to follow.

Upcoming events:

  • Parent/Teacher Conferences- week of January 14th
  • Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday- Monday, January 21st - School Closed

Sunday School News

Happy New Year!

This is going to be a great year for Youth & Family at St. Aidan's! Be on the look out for some exciting events and wonderful opportunities for growth and fellowship!

As Sunday School transforms into its newest manifestation, I am making yet another plea outright for SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS! This is an opportunity for MINISTRY here at St. Aidan's...to give back to our precious community. It will involve minimal time: one Sunday per month with very little preparation time, but it will surely be one of the MOST rewarding experiences you will ever have.

Please call, email or find me through the church office @ (310) 457-7966, to be a part of this special ministry.

May the spirit of Christ's love and generosity be with all of you this New Year and always,

Lisa Devine
Director of Youth & Family Ministry

These prayers are from Dr. Jordan S. Rubin’s book The Maker’s Diet. They are meant to serve as guidelines for us. Dr. Rubin’s book teaches a holistic approach to health. A Morning Prayer for Healing

Father, God, I thank You for creating me in Your image.
I praise You that I am wonderfully and fearfully made.
I confess that You are the God that heals, my Great Physician.
I ask You to heal my body from the top of my head to the soles of my feet.
I pray that You would regenerate every bone, joint, tendon, ligament, tissue, organ and cell of my body.
This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it.

An Evening Prayer for Restoration

Father, God, I thank You for sustaining me today.
I thank You that You are made perfect in my weakness.
Your grace is sufficient for me.
I thank You that Your steadfast love never ceases, and Your mercies are new every morning.
You say in Your Word that mourning may come for a night, but the new day will bring gladness.
Bless me with a healing night’s sleep.
Restore unto me the joy of my salvation.
Help me to stay on the path that leads to life.

The new St. Aidan’s Directory is now available! Please pick up a copy on Sunday in the Parish Hall. A hearty thank you to those who produced it: JoAnn McCrea for hours of data entry; Lorraine Senna for the beautiful cover design and editing; and Pete Tompkins for the much needed formatting and printing. Thank you so much for helping us be in touch with one another.
