Message from the Rector
Paul
writes in the letter Romans, “To all in Rome who are loved by God
and called to be saints: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and
from the Lord Jesus Christ.” The word we have in English as "saint" in
Latin was "sanctus," which means "holy." To be holy
is not to be possessed of a particular quality (as in "holier than
thou" or, another word associated with "saint" - to be "sanctified").
Rather, to be holy means to be set apart for God's use. We say that the
church sanctuary is holy not because of its design or its furnishings but
because its primary purpose is to be the arena in which God and God's people
encounter one another. When the clergy say a prayer of blessing over water,
it becomes holy water used in sacramental ways such as for baptism. The
followers of Christ were holy ones not because of any supernatural gifts
but because they claimed Jesus as Lord, were God's beloved and were available
to do God's will. In a sense, they were saints not for what they had accomplished
but because of what they were becoming.More >
Annual
Thanksgiving Interfaith Service
On Thursday, Nov. 22, Thanksgiving Day, begin the day of gratitude
by gathering with others in our community to celebrate God’s goodness
and provision. More details on the location will be forthcoming.
Stewardship Ingathering on All Saints Day
Parishioners Rosemary Bauer and Ed Milkovich will be offering a
stewardship reflection on October 28th and Nov. 4th at both services.
On All Saints Sunday (Nov. 4) we will also be celebrating the ingathering
of our pledges and commitments of time, talent and treasure. Following
the services there will be a festive coffee hour including a special forum
with guest speaker the Rev. Dr. Brian Johnson, 11:20-Noon. The Rev. Dr.
Brian Johnson is originally from New York and is the son of a Mohawk Indian
and an Irish immigrant. He is an Episcopal priest and a neuropsychologist
in private and hospital practice in Los Angeles. He has served parishes
in San Francisco, Oakland, Compton, Los Angeles and Westchester. He has
particular interests in the areas of church history, liturgical studies
and stewardship.
All Saints Sunday – Remembering the Saints in
our Lives
In honor and remembrance of the saints who have touched our lives
and gone before us, you are invited to bring photos and/or memorabilia
of these individuals to place on the small altar. There will also be a
time during the Eucharistic Prayer in which we may name aloud these individuals.
Prison Chaplain visits St. Aidan’s
Dennis Gibbs is the new Episcopal Prison Chaplain at the Twin Towers
and he will be visiting with us on Sunday, November 18th. He will preach
at both services and speak at a forum following the 10 am service about
prison ministries. There are a number of ways that we at St. Aidan’s
can reach out in love and service to those in the local youth camps.
Diocesan Convention in Riverside
Diocesan Convention is being held Nov. 30 – Dec. 1 in Riverside. Please
hold our candidates (Jeff Johnson, Joe Lopez, Lon Porter, and the Rev. Joyce
Stickney) and diocese in prayer during this time.
Advent Evensong and Potluck Dinner
Please join us for Evensong on Sunday, Dec.2 at 4:30 pm followed

Christmas is fast approaching! It is time for us to remember the children at Dorcas House in Tijuana, Mexico. Each year St. Aidan’s provides pajamas or sweatsuits for each of the forty children who live at Dorcas House. They are there because a parent is serving a prison sentence in Tijuana.
On Sunday, November 4 we will provide a list of the boys and girls, their sizes and ages. If parishioners can choose a child they can purchase pajamas or sweatsuits for him or her. Then, return the gifts wrapped and ready to deliver by Sunday, December 9.
Any questions about this longstanding St. Aidan’s project should be directed to Sky Stipanowich @ 310-506-7068.
Gracias and Feliz Navidad!
The 2007 Directory will be available this month! Please pick up a copy on Sunday in the Parish Hall. A hearty thank you to those who produced it: JoAnn McCrea for hours of data entry, Lorraine Senna for the beautiful cover design and editing, and Pete Tompkins for the much needed formatting and printing. Thank you so much for helping us be in touch with one another.
At an ecumenical community service on October 25th in response to the recent fire, people gathered to pray, worship, support one another, and hear a word of hope in the midst of loss. Rabbi Judith proclaimed, “this is a community that knows how to re-build and they will join the congregation of Malibu Presbyterian.” The religious leaders of the community later discussed possibly having the Thanksgiving Interfaith Service in the ruins of the church and gathering ashes for our Ash Wednesday services next year. Please continue to hold the Presbyterian Church and Nursery School in your prayers as they mourn the loss of their buildings and begin the process of rebuilding.
Triolet on a Line Apocryphally Attributed to Martin Luther
Why should the Devil get all the good tunes,
The booze and the neon and Saturday night,
The swaying in darkness, the lovers like spoons?
Why should the Devil get all the good tunes?
Does he hum them to while away sad afternoons
And the long, lonesome Sundays? Or sing them for spite?
Why should the Devil get all the good tunes,
The booze and the neon and Saturday night?-A.E. Stallings

“Personals” is a section of the St. Aidan’s Newsletter
featuring personal thoughts, reminiscences, contributions, anecdotes or
observations from parishioners. In keeping with the spirit of our new alternative
distribution system (e-Newsletter), “Personals” is also a virtual
section. Meaning (in this case), if no one contributes, then there is nothing
to read, in which case it does not exist. Ha!
Please participate, anonymously if you wish.

Oh, how I love these autumn months! Fall harvest is such a wonderful time of year and an opportunity to celebrate the abundance (of love, faith, community...) in our lives. Plus, there are so many fun holidays and celebrations during this time. The kids are excited, and SO AM I!More >
Dear Saint Aidan’s Church Families,
Our Halloween Parade and Luncheon on Wednesday October 31st was very enjoyable.
This Luncheon was sponsored by the Kilroy Family as a fundraiser for our
staff to attend the California Association Education of Young Children’s
Conference in Long Beach. All Families were very generous with their financial
support. Our school will greatly benefit from this opportunity for the teachers
to further study their field.
Below is our staff picture. You are blessed to have this group of professionals
represent your Church!
